History

Third Floor Construction, Inc. was founded in December 1993 in a Manhattan loft space on 14th Street. We converted what had been warehouse space for a Spanish language books publisher into a 3 unit live/work artists space with a cabinetry shop in the center. The initial staff of the organization included architecture students from Pratt Institute notably the woodworker Glen Vilme and interior designer Yun Hi Ji and theater technicians and other stage people from the Ontological Hysteric Theater and the Wooster Group, both off-Broadway experimental theaters. This group included the actor and master woodworker Jeff Webster, electrician, now director, Eric Dyer, and carpenter, now architect and sculptor, John Cleater.

We started making built in cabinets and furniture and installing custom architectural woodwork. By 1995 we were taking on whole contracts including all phases of renovations, mostly in Manhattan Co-op apartments. In 1998 Ben Fiering and artist Meredeth Danluck partnered to develop a larger loft space on West 36th Street. The following February Ben and painter Alexis Shein partnered to develop another floor of the same building. The two floors totaled 7000 square feet of space developed for work-only artists lofts complete with a central woodshop and darkroom. The spaces remain in use by a group of artists to this day. In 1998 Benjamin Fiering, having moved to Peekskill NY, initially working under his own name and later under Benjamin Fiering Construction, Inc began to pursue construction contracts in residential home building in the Hudson Valley area while continuing business in New York City. Ben sold his interests in both floors of the 36th street lofts in 2001 and began to develop properties in Newburgh and Orange County New York. Today we build additions and complete houses and work on projects which involve the restoration of the rich New York State vernacular architecture. At the same time we have retained our involvement in the architectural community in New York City and have produced work with architects in modern styles including work with Janson Goldstein Architects, Stephen Holl, Edward I. Mills Architects, Carol Kurth, David Wallance, Standard Architects and Resolution 4 Architects.

The Third Floor Corporation and Benjamin Fiering have served all seven counties that border the Hudson River between Albany and Westchester/Rockland as well as the Bronx and Manhattan boroughs of New York, and Fairfield County Connecticut
